Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine- Foraging Course Introduction

Earlier this year I signed up for the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine’s Foraging Course. I’ve had a love of foraging since I was a child when my father made a point of teaching us about edible wild foods. Wild greens are still my favorite part of spring! Learn herb foraging is somewhat new to me, so I am looking forward to learning more about this. This section of my blog will mostly focus on the studies I am doing for this class, and other herbal things that tickle my fancy. I have been more and more interested in herbal medicine lately. And herbal foraging is right up my alley! There are many medicinal herbs in my region and I am eager to explore them.

This course is focused on foraging wild medicinal and edible herbs. It is a long-term commitment, likely to take me much of the year to finish. Especially since here in New Hampshire it was snowing up until last week! In addition, there is an entire module on botany that has been a bit difficult for me. But I am learning a lot and cannot wait for spring.

The course is divided into 7 modules. The first is the introductory module. Module 2 is all about botany. Module 3 is about Core Herbal Medicinal Preparations. Then the fun starts!  Modules 4 through 7 are all about foraging in early spring, spring, summer, and fall.

At this point I have only completed module 1. I have been working through botany 2 months now, but it has been an exceptionally few months, and I have not been able to give it my full attention, which it needs. I have picked the herbs I will be studying. You’ll find here my love letters to them, posts with recipes, monographs and more. I will be beginning with my personal favorite, dandelions.

I like to say that dandelions are my spirit animal! I love every piece of them. They are edible from root to blossom and were one of the first wild foods I learned to cook. They make wonderful medicine, can be used in jellies, and last year I made a dandelion wine that was lovely.

The course has a massive manual that I had sent off to be printed. I spend so much time on the computer in my daily life, I cannot bear to spend my off hours reading on it. As I move through the course I will be posting my homework assignments and things I have learned here. So far the course is very well written, has clear expectations, and you can move at your own pace. I imagine if spring ever comes I will start being more productive! The course materials and classes are all online, which works very well with how I learn.  I absolutely can’t wait for the snow to melt, the dandelions to spring up, and to get to Module 4, when foraging begins!
